Expensive, but what do you expect in a tiny hard to access town in Alaska. Service was excellent and friendly, the food tasty. We had the halibut and shrimp basket. I felt the halibut was better than the shrimp. It came with a side of fries. They had a large selection of bottles beers and other beer like alcoholic beverages. Would recommend if you find yourself in Whitten.

Overlooking the water in Whittier which you get to by the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel quite a feat of engineering. Built by the military in the Second World War as a railway tunnel to access their submarine base it is now the longest tunnel serving rail and motor traffic at the same time. It’s one way and you drive on the railway tracks usually on the half hour from Portage and on the hour from Wittier. The seafood cafe is self service and also has a selection of beers. I had the halibut and shrimp and we also ordered the squid burger. Only a 3 as the batter was disappointing and greasy.

Decided I had to try Varley's Swiftwater Seafood after hearing rave reviews on YouTube. After ordering at the counter, the server brought our meal to the dining area. The half shrimp and half halibut basket was delicious. Prices seemed decent ($23.99 for the basket) for a tourist destination a a cruise ship stop. Plan to visit again on my next visit to Whittier.
